Ross Bleckner’s paintings and photographs find their place in mist, circling somewhere between ephemerality and time, between infinity and now. An icon of American art in the latter years of the 20th century, Bleckner investigates the intangible – thought, time, memory, loss, immortality, desire -- in luminous, romantic works that capture the imagination, compelling as much to the eye as to the mind. His recent “flower” series form a meditation on beauty and transience, recalling the “vanitas” and floral still life paintings of the Old Masters while claiming a very fresh, contemporary hold on the possibilities of form, color, and the mysterious workings of a technological age. In a 2005 interview, he noted, “Whether it’s anatomical, medical, illustrational, metaphoric, I’m trying to figure out some plausible way that things work or don’t work, to look for some meaning through the language that I’ve chosen to speak.”
Bleckner was among the first artists to exhibit with the legendary Mary Boone Gallery in New York, known for showcasing the vanguard artists of the 1980s such as Peter Halley, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Julian Schnabel. He continues to exhibit at Boone today (along with Lehmann-Maupin and other major galleries internationally), even as he devotes much of his time to his work as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador in the fight against human trafficking – a commitment as revealing of his passion for humanity as is his art.
